In 2022, Paris Fashion Week witnessed a groundbreaking moment: supermodel Bella Hadid stood onstage as a team sprayed a liquid onto her body, which solidified into a seamless white dress within minutes. This was Fabrican, the world’s first spray-on fabric, invented by Spanish designer and scientist Manel Torres.

Developed in collaboration with Imperial College London, Fabrican is a liquid polymer blend containing cotton, polyester, and solvents. When sprayed through an aerosol can, the solvents evaporate, leaving behind a durable, flexible textile. The material can be washed, reworn, dissolved, and even recycled—ushering in a new era of sustainable fashion.

The Genesis of Fabrican

Torres, a trained fashion designer, grew frustrated with the industry’s wastefulness. “Every year, 92 million tons of textiles end up in landfills,” he explains. “I wanted to create clothing that adapts to our needs without harming the planet.”

In 2003, he began experimenting with liquid fabrics. After 19 years of trials, Fabrican was born. The technology allows users to “print” garments directly onto the body, eliminating fabric cuts and excess production.
